Acupuncture

Acupuncture in its simplest form is the insertion of needles into specific points on distinct channels or meridians. These points connect nerves, muscles and organs that influence the body’s blood flow. It can be thought of as conduits throughout the body’s flow of energy. Acupuncturists insert sterile, single-use, disposable needles in these specific points that can help with a variety of diseases. Acupuncture originated in China over 2,500 years ago and it is still widely used in the world for various ailments. The Chinese medical system has existed for even a longer period of time that involves acupuncture, herbal medicinals, tui na, and qi gong exercises. It is one of the few medical systems that has been meticulously documented over time and can still apply to today’s modern day of living. Our acupuncture sessions may also involve herbal treatment (topical or internal), moxibustion, cupping, gua sha and tui na.

Manipulation or adjustments can help restore mobility to alleviate pain, decrease muscle tightness and increase tissue healing.

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that dates back more than 2,000 years, but it was made popular during the summer olympics. The vacuum that is created draws stagnant fluids up to the surface of the tissues, improving circulation, and delivering nutrients more quickly to the injured areas. When it is used alone, once the stagnant fluids are drawn out, it can be dispersed by massage or local application of specific Chinese herbs. Cupping can be used as an important first step for treatment of acute sprain and strains. It is particularly useful right after the injury has occurred to help reduce swelling that is blocking normal circulation in the area. Other research supports the use of cupping for acute and chronic muscular pain, arthritis, herpes zoster, facial paralysis, as well as many other conditions.

Tui Na

Tui Na, a traditional Chinese manual therapy, has long been integrated into martial arts traditions alongside specialized trauma remedies to address injuries stemming from rigorous training.
